Police: Man who shot at officers wounded when police return fire

An unidentified man was shot by police after allegedly firing shots at officers late Monday afternoon in the city's Fairhill section.

Police said that about 4:45 p.m., two 26th District officers responded to a report of a man with a gun in the 2200 block of North Fairhill Street, according to Chief Inspector Carl Holmes.

The suspect, described as being in his late teens or early 20s, fired two shots in the direction of the officers, who then returned fire, Holmes said. Police took the wounded man to Temple University Hospital, where he was in critical but stable condition, according to Holmes.

The officers were not hurt in the confrontation.

Two bullets struck a window and the siding of a house. Preliminary information indicates that the shots "came from the suspect's gun," Holmes said. A gun and a holster were recovered at the scene, according to police.

Police were investigating reports that the man had exited a nearby vehicle, which may have been involved in a carjacking, Holmes said.
