Bullets ripped through a Southwest Center City neighborhood late Sunday, killing one young man and wounding another, police said.

At least 31 shots were fired when the gunfire erupted about 11:45 p.m. on the 1600 block of Catharine Street, Homicide Lt. Norman Davenport told reporters at a news conference Monday. Bullets also smashed into at least two cars and into a nearby house, where the residents dived to the ground.

Arriving officers found a 19-year-old man with several gunshot wounds to his body and one to his head, and took him to took him to THomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:02 a.m. Monday, police said.

An 18-year-old man who had been walking with the older teen was shot in a leg. He managed to run more than two blocks to the 700 block of Dorrance Street, where he was taken by private vehicle to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in stable condition, police said.

Davenport said both victims lived in South Philadelphia. He declined to release the 19-year-old's name, saying police wanted to ensure that all of his family members had been notified. Authorities are not releasing the surviving victim's name for his safety.

Police believe there were two to three shooters, all male, Davenport said.

Investigators questioned some witnesses at Police Headquarters and are hoping surveillance cameras in the neighborhood will shed light on the shooting. The motive was not known, Davenport said.

He asked anyone with information on the shooting to call police or the Citizens' Crime Commission tip line at 215-546-TIPS (-8477).
