1 in 4 Philly-area residents to travel for holidays

About one in four Philadelphia-area residents is expected to travel during the end-of-the-year holiday season.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says just above 1 million people in Philadelphia and the city's Pennsylvania suburbs -- 25.5 percent of the area's population -- are likely to hit the roads, rails and skies between Dec. 21 and Jan. 1.

That's a 0.5-percent increase from the number of people who made trips last year, AAA says. But the percent of people traveling in the Philadelphia area is slightly below the national average of 29.7 percent.

Nationwide, 94.5 million people are expected to travel during this holiday season, an all-time high, according to AAA.

The group says year-end travel has increased both locally and nationally for five consecutive years.

In the Philadelphia area, 90 percent of those traveling are expected to drive to their destinations and 7 percent are slated to fly.
