City again asks for pools cash

It's time to dig deep again for the city's outdoor pools.

It's time to dig deep again for the city's outdoor pools.

Mayor Nutter Tuesday kicked off the third annual "Splash and Summer FUNd" campaign to support keeping outdoor pools open this summer. The city first started fundraising for pools in 2009, after Nutter cut funding due to budget woes.

Parks and Recreation Commissioner Michael DiBerardinis said city pools were a key part of being a Philly kid in the summer months.

"It's emblematic of summer in the city," he said.

What you need to know about the campaign:

* The campaign aims to raise $600,000 to open 70 outdoor pools.

* To date the city has raised $506,000 from supporters like First Niagra Financial Group, United Health Care, Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest and the Lombard Swim Club.

* Officials said pools will be open for a 10-week season, with the first openings scheduled for June 17.
