UNTIL WEDNESDAY's apparent mob hit, Philadelphia had gone nearly a decade without one.
The previous three, all of which remain unsolved:
November 2003: Mobster John "Johnny Gongs" Casasanto, on house arrest for stabbing singer Chico DeBarge outside an Old City nightclub, is found lying in a pool of blood from gunshot wounds to his head and back in his kitchen on Durfor Street near 12th in South Philadelphia.
January 2002: Mob associate Raymond "Long John" Martorano, 74, is fatally wounded when someone pumps three bullets through the windshield of his Lincoln Town Car near 8th and Spruce streets while he is on his way to a doctor's appointment at Pennsylvania Hospital.
October 1999: Former third-in-command mob boss Ron Turchi's naked body, beaten and bound, his head covered with a plastic bag, is found in the trunk of a Toyota on Passyunk Avenue near Christian Street in South Philly, after his wife reported him missing.
