Man shot to death outside University City bar

A man was fatally shot overnight outside a popular bar in University City, and police believe they have the shooter in custody.

Philadelphia police said officers were called to 40th and Spruce streets at about 1:30 a.m. for a report of shots fired. Officers found a 31-year-old man unconscious on the sidewalk, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and torso.

The man was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead just before 1:45 a.m.

Police identified him as Timothy Cary, of the 5100 block of Locust Street in West Philadelphia.

Officers from the University of Pennsylvania's police department apprehended the suspected shooter a block away, on the 4000 block of Pine Street, shortly after the incident.

The slaying happened just off Penn's campus, but officials said neither the victim nor the suspect is affiliated with the school.

Police said the shooting is believed to have stemmed from a dispute that started inside the Copabanana bar at 40th and Spruce. It wasn't immediately known what the men were fighting about.

Authorities said at least 10 shots were fired, and the proximity of the shell casings to Cary indicated he was shot at point-blank range. The gun believed to be the murder weapon was also recovered.

Several witnesses at the bar identified the 26-year-old suspect as the shooter, police said.

No one else was injured, and police are not looking for any other assailants.
