SEPTA seeks to ID man who shot his hand on bus
SEPTA officials are trying to identify the passenger who accidentally shot himself on a bus in East Germantown earlier this week.
The incident happened at about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, when the man apparently shot himself while adjusting a firearm in his waistband while he was riding a Route K bus.
Surveillance video the transit agency released today in an effort to identify the passenger appears to show the man getting shot in the hand. He then exits vehicle after the incident, near Chelten Avenue and Magnolia Street. Authorities found blood on the bus.
SEPTA Transit Police Chief Thomas Nestel said officials want to identify the man and suspect he may have been carrying the gun illegally.
"We don't like people carrying illegal firearms on the transit system," Nestel said. "We really don't like people firing firearms on the transit system."
No one else was injured in the incident.
Police have checked with area hospitals, and the man has not sought medical attention for the injury.
"No gunshot wound should be ignored," Nestel said.
Anyone with information about the incident or the man's identity should call SEPTA transit police at 215-580-8111.
