Weekend forecast in Philly: Warm, thunderstorms, potential rainfall record

More warmth and rain on the way for Philadelphia this weekend.

The National Weather Service says temperatures from today through the weekend should be in the mid-to-high 80s. Rounds of thunderstorms are also expected to pass through the area each day.

Those showers could push Philadelphia to a new rainfall record for June. The current record, set in 1938, stands at 10.06 inches.

As of this morning, 9.37 inches of rain had fallen in Philadelphia so far this month. That total is 6.29 inches above normal.

And more downpours may be on tap.

"Some showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and this evening may produce strong winds and heavy rain," the weather service says.

Strong storms may also pop up over the weekend.

Temperatures will be warm, but cooler than the 90-plus highs Philadelphians experienced this week.

Highs today and over the weekend should be close to normal for late June, with the mercury expected to reach 88 degrees today and Saturday, and 85 degrees Sunday.

Showers and thunderstorms today are most likely after 4 p.m., the weather service says.

Strong storms are expected to sweep the East Coast from Boston to North Carolina, according to AccuWeather.
