Body found in river isn't missing student

An autopsy yesterday ruled out the possibility that a body found in the Delaware River near Palmyra might be that of a Haddonfield High School student who leaped from the Benjamin Franklin Bridge on Easter Sunday, police said.

An autopsy yesterday ruled out the possibility that a body found in the Delaware River near Palmyra might be that of a Haddonfield High School student who leaped from the Benjamin Franklin Bridge on Easter Sunday, police said.

Two fisherman found the unidentified male on Thursday morning near the Tacony Palmyra Bridge. The body was removed from the water by New Jersey state troopers.

It appeared to have been in the water for several months. It could not be positively identified because of advanced decomposition. New Jersey State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones said several factors led police to conclude the body was not that of Haddonfield Memorial High School junior John "J.T." Haggerty. He declined to elaborate.

Haggerty, 17, led Philadelphia police on a short car chase April 7 before stopping mid-span. Officers said Haggerty got out of his car, jumped onto the PATCO tracks, and plunged over a railing. Authorities said the search for Haggerty's body continues. - Sam Wood
