Parasite caused illness that closed WCU pool

West Chester University confirmed yesterday that preliminary tests indicated that cryptosporidium, a chlorine-resistant intestinal parasite, caused the illnesses that prompted closure of the university's pool on July 11.

The outbreak, which interrupted a swimming program at Graham Natatorium, likely occurred during the two-week session that began June 18, according to a letter the university sent to parents.

Pam Sheridan, a university spokeswoman, said that although the county Health Department had given the university the go-ahead to reopen the pool, the school was keeping it closed so it can implement procedures to prevent recurrences. She said the university hoped to open the facility before classes resume at West Chester on Aug. 27. - Kathleen Brady Shea
