WOODBRIDGE, N.J. - A man helping his brother extend a sewer line from a home was rescued yesterday afternoon after being trapped more than three hours in a collapsed trench.
Walter Hanks, director of emergency management for Woodbridge Township, said the man was freed about 4:10 p.m and was conscious and breathing. He was taken to a hospital by helicopter. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known.
Mayor John McCormac identified the man as Leobardo Tellez-Velazquez, 34, of Plainfield.
He became trapped five to six feet below ground shortly before 1 p.m. when the trench collapsed, Police Capt. Margaret Schmidt said.
Rescue workers first secured the surrounding walls of the collapsed area, about six to eight feet in diameter, and then dug delicately around him, Hanks said. He said about 60 people assisted in the rescue effort.
Experts at the scene said the trench should have been braced to prevent a collapse, McCormac said. - AP
