Gun found at Frankford High forces lockdown

Frankford High School was locked down yesterday morning while school police searched for a male student who had taken an unloaded handgun to school in a book bag.

The 17-year-old boy, an 11th grader whose name was not released, bolted down a hallway after school police at the X-ray machine spotted the firearm in his book bag about 8:15 a.m. School district spokesman Fernando Gallard said the lockdown was lifted at 9:30, after it became clear that the student was not in the building.

City police were searching for the student in the neighborhood. Gallard said the student would be charged with bringing a weapon to school, immediately suspended, and scheduled for an expulsion hearing.

This is the second gun found by X-ray machines in a city school in five days. Strawberry Mansion High School was locked down Thursday after school police found a gun in a book bag there.
