Officer who shot suspect in Camden identified

Authorities yesterday identified Gary Towers as the Camden police officer who killed a crime suspect who, they said, fired at police early Monday. Towers, 33 and a member of the force since January 2002, was on patrol around 3:15 a.m. when he saw a Ford Taurus that matched the description of car sought in an investigation, authorities said.

Braxton Lane, 28, a passenger in the car, jumped out and ran down an alley. Towers followed Lane in his cruiser, and Lane fired at least three shots at it, authorities said.
