Schools cutting new checks for employees

Payroll staff from the Philadelphia School District are working to cut and process new checks for employees who did not get them last week.

Amy Guerin, a district spokeswoman, said nearly 4,000 employees who do not have direct deposit had not received their checks by Dec. 14.

"All 3,900 were cut and mailed as usual," she said. "We can only speculate that the massive amount of mail that goes into the U.S. postal system during the holidays has slowed delivery."

The district e-mailed employees to say they would get new checks if they told the district to place stop-payment orders on the mailed checks and went to the administration building at 440 N. Broad St. in person. Guerin said 400 employees asked for new checks. She said payroll staffers had completed 250 and expected the remainder to be finished by tomorrow at the latest.
