Trenton gang leader sentenced to 17 years in drug ring

A leader of a Trenton street gang was sentenced yesterday to 17 years in federal prison for distributing cocaine with a wholesale value of more than $1 million, authorities said. Omar Aikens, a leader of the Bloods "Sex Money Murder" gang, was reputed to be Trenton's largest cocaine dealer when he was arrested in August 2005. Aikens, 28, admitted he received more than 30 pounds of cocaine by express mail from Houston between September 2003 and the time of his arrest. He also admitted he hired couriers to ride Amtrak trains to deliver the drugs to lower-level dealers throughout the region, said Greg Reinert, spokesman for U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie. Federal prosecutors determined at sentencing that the actual amount of cocaine Aikens distributed was closer to 110 pounds. Aikens' supplier, Hilliaurd Smith of Sugarland, Texas, pleaded guilty to his role in the network, and is awaiting sentencing, Reinert said. - Sam Wood
