Residents in five New Jersey school districts, including four locally, voted down more than $102 million in school construction proposals on Tuesday, according to the New Jersey School Boards Association.

Three other districts voted in favor of projects totaling more than $49.5 million, the association reported yesterday. That included nearly $1.8 million for renovations to the Aura School in Elk Township, Gloucester County.

The local proposals defeated were:

Oaklyn, Camden County: almost $6 million in renovations to the Oaklyn Elementary School.

Delsea Regional, Gloucester County: nearly $6.5 million for renovations to the middle and high schools, including roof and solar projects.

Deptford Township, Gloucester County: close to $76 million for additions and renovations to the high and middle schools, renovations to five other schools, air-conditioning, and other improvements.

Washington Township, Gloucester County: almost $6.3 million for roof repairs and solar panels at the high school.

"Our district is disappointed that the community did not take advantage of the tangible financial and environmental benefits of this project," Cheryl Simone, Washington Township's school superintendent, said in a written release. "The Board of Education will have to decide whether to pursue this project through a future referendum or abandon it entirely."
