Boy, 6, rescued after car goes into Schuylkill
A 6-year-old Southwest Philadelphia boy was in "extremely critical" condition last night after being rescued from inside a car that plunged into the Schuylkill yesterday, police said. Corey Baxter was alone in the car, which was running while his mother placed something in the trunk in a parking lot near the reviewing stand on Kelly Drive, when it moved forward and into the river about 4:30 p.m., police said. They said they did not know why the car moved. An unidentified man who assisted other bystanders with the rescue punched through a car window in an attempt to free the boy. The man was treated at Hahnemann University Hospital for cuts to his hand. The civilian rescuers did manage to get the boy out, police said. He was taken to Hahnemann and transferred to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. - Anthony R. Wood
