Woman charged as crack smoke sickens boy, 2

ALIQUIPPA, Pa. - A woman is in the Beaver County Jail because police say a 2-year-old boy was sickened by secondhand smoke from crack she smoked.

Mary Lou Makley, 45, of Beaver, is charged with simple assault, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police say Makley had the mother's permission to take the boy shopping. But police say Makley then stopped at a friend's house in Aliquippa and smoked crack while the boy was nearby. That happened May 13 and police say the next day the boy's mother took him to the hospital, where his blood tested positive for cocaine.

The boy has recovered. It was not clear whether Makley has an attorney. She was arrested this week.
