City's oldest black private school to close in June

Ivy Leaf School, the oldest private African American school in the city, will close June 13.

A letter sent to parents earlier this month announcing the demise of Ivy Leaf's elementary school said competition from charter schools had caused enrollment to fall and tuition revenue to decline. The elementary school with children from nursery school through fourth grade is at 1196 Washington Lane in East Germantown. The school announced earlier this year that its middle-school program with students from fourth through eighth grade would close in June. The middle school is at 6929 N. Broad St., East Oak Lane.

The private school was founded in 1965 by William and Liller Green.
