A 16-year-old Winslow boy will be on probation until his 19th birthday for an ATV accident that killed a 13-year-old friend and injured another girl in April.

The teenager, whose name has not been released because he is a minor and his case was handled in Juvenile Court, will serve no time in a juvenile detention facility, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

He pleaded guilty to death by auto and assault by auto in October. He was sentenced Thursday.

The April 4 accident killed Dominique Dezii of Sicklerville and injured Amber Napoli of Berlin, then 15. Both girls had been riding on the back of the teenager's ATV.

The boy was giving the girls a ride about 10:30 p.m. on Myers Road, which does not allow ATV traffic, authorities said. The boy passed a police cruiser and sped away, concerned that the officer would pull them over. The cruiser did not follow, however.

The boy ran a red light at Route 73, authorities said, and a Nissan Altima plowed into the ATV as the boy tried to cross four lanes of traffic.

None of the teenagers was wearing a helmet, and the ATV was not designed to carry three people.

The crash killed Dezii, and the boy and Napoli were taken to Cooper University Hospital.

In addition to being on probation, the teenager will not be able to get a driver's license until after he turns 18. He also will receive mandatory counseling.
