A man severely beat another man and then barricaded himself in his Haddon Heights home for hours yesterday before surrendering to police, authorities said.

Kevin Anthony, 42, was taken into custody about 1 p.m. Charges were pending, according to officials.

Police descended on his house on Wayne Avenue shortly before 10 a.m. after neighbors reported seeing a man being dragged out and left on the porch.

The man, whose name was not released, had been badly beaten on Thursday night during an argument with Anthony, said Jason Laughlin, a spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Authorities believe drugs were involved, Laughlin said. The alleged victim was under the influence of drugs yesterday when officers found him, he said.

The man, who is 40 and from Oaklyn, was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden yesterday. He was in critical but stable condition, Laughlin said.

Anthony refused to open the door when officers knocked. It was not clear whether he was armed, but soon the street was lined with police cruisers, fire trucks, a SWAT team, and a bomb squad. Neighboring businesses and houses were evacuated.

After noon, officers knocked Anthony's door down and sent a communication device into the house. Anthony soon walked out of the house with his hands in the air.

Anthony does not have a violent criminal history, Laughlin said.
