A Sicklerville teenager died early yesterday when he was struck by a bullet that might have been intended for a friend, authorities said.
Davon Jones, 16, was wounded in Camden after he stepped out of a car, authorities said. The Winslow Township High School student was with a group that had traveled to the Ablett Village apartments to pick up a friend who was visiting a girl there, authorities said.
The friend, whom police did not identify, had apparently been involved in an argument and called Jones for a ride, officials said.
Jones was in the front passenger seat when the car arrived at the housing development about midnight. The gunman fired several times as Jones stepped out of the vehicle to let his friend into the backseat, authorities said.
Jones was pronounced dead a short time later.
His cousin, Jabria Walker, 16, said the teenager was one of four brothers. He often used the nickname "Nice" when he rapped with his older brother Mike, Walker said.
Indya Seales, 17, who lives across the street from Jones' family, said she could not believe it when she heard that her boyfriend had died. Seales said Jones previously lived in Camden, where he attended Woodrow Wilson High School. He often visited friends there, she said.
"I didn't like him going down there," she said.
Walker said Jones had been incarcerated earlier this year and transferred to Winslow Township High after his release.
"He lived life to the fullest," Walker said. "He wasn't scared of anything."
Jason Laughlin, spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, said officials could not comment on whether Jones had a criminal record because he was a juvenile.
Brandon Jones, 14, no relation to Davon, lives next door to the victim's family and said Davon Jones once faced down some bullies who had been picking on him on a school bus.
"He always stood up for me," Jones said.
