Two people died yesterday morning when their car went off the road and struck a utility pole along Limerick Center Road in Montgomery County, authorities said.
Police responded to the crash just off Route 422 around 7:30 a.m. and pronounced the driver, Ryan Menkins, 21, of Royersford, and passenger, Shana Geyer, 22, of Lower Pottsgrove, dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation indicated excessive speed played a role, Limerick Township Police Chief William Albany said.
Menkins graduated from Spring-Ford High School in Royersford and had worked as a stonemason. He was preparing to join the Air Force Reserve, said Dee Raser, a family friend at the Menkins home yesterday.
"We are stunned," she said. "We can't believe this happened."
Some in the family affectionately called Menkins "pretty boy" for his blond hair and blue eyes, Raser said.
The family did not have all the details about the crash yet, Raser said.
"He had stayed at a friend's house and was coming home," Raser said.
Geyer's relatives could not be reached yesterday.
