When Tyrone D. Carter allegedly slipped a Center City bank teller a note demanding money Monday, he was given $633.

What the alleged bank robber didn't know was that the teller had slipped a GPS device inside the stack of money, police said.

Soon after the 11:33 a.m. robbery at the PNC Bank at 1600 Market St., police radio broadcast information about the suspect, including the location of the GPS device, police said.

Two officers in the area of I-95 at Westmoreland Street observed a taxicab stopped nearby in the 3200 block of Richmond Street with a passenger fitting the description of the bank robbery suspect, police said.

Carter, 38, of the 6200 block of West Jefferson Street in West Philadelphia, was taken from the cab and arrested. Police said they found the $633, which included two $50 bait bills - with serial numbers recorded by the bank to make them easier to track.

Police declined to say explicitly that the officers were drawn to the cab because of GPS information.

Carter was charged with robbery and related offenses.
