A 3-year-old girl drowned Saturday in a Newtown Square pool, police said.

Emergency responders arrived at St. Albans Swim and Tennis Club, near West Chester Pike and Bryn Mawr Avenue, just before 5 p.m. to find lifeguards performing CPR on the toddler.

She died at Bryn Mawr Hospital, said Chief Dennis Anderson of the Newtown Township Police Department in Delaware County.

Club management shut down the pool area while officers tried to determine what had happened.

Investigators will not release the girl's name until Monday, pending notification of family, Anderson said. It was unclear whom the child was with when she drowned.

Employees said St. Albans, a private club, would have no comment.

Four other people had drowned since last weekend during the run-up to the traditional start of the summer season.

On Wednesday, three teenagers drowned separately at Olympia Lakes in Burlington County, in the Delaware River near Pennypack Park, and in a Gloucester County creek.

A Kensington woman, 23, drowned May 21 in Neshaminy Creek.
