The Overbrook Monarchs, a youth sports organization, was facing the possibility of a canceled football season because of an incident late last week in which thousands of dollars' worth of equipment was stolen or vandalized.

After news reports Monday about the Monarchs' plight, the team received numerous pledges of financial assistance, including from U.S. Rep. Bob Brady, an Overbrook native.

"When I found out what happened, I called the team and told them to tell the kids that I would do whatever I had to do to make sure that they have everything they need when the season starts," Brady (D., Pa.) said in a statement issued Tuesday.

The congressman vowed that if he could not raise the money, "I'll take it out of my pocket. This organization has worked too hard to let somebody ruin the upcoming season. I played at this playground. This is my neighborhood team, and I have always supported them, and I will continue to do so."

The Monarchs have about 350 children participating in nine football teams and three cheerleading squads, said Bill Taylor, Monarchs athletic director.

The team's sports equipment, as well as cooking equipment for game-day concessions, was stored in a trailer at its field at 66th and Callowhill Streets. Numerous items were taken, and others were damaged or destroyed.

Police are investigating.

Donations for replacement items may be mailed to the Overbrook Monarchs, Box 28800, Philadelphia 19151.
