Ryan White, the 9-year-old Lower Makefield boy who was critically hurt in a hit-and-run accident after a Phillies game in San Francisco 13 days ago, has been transferred to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, his grandfather said Tuesday.
Ryan was discharged Monday from San Francisco General Hospital and flown to Philadelphia, where he was taken directly to Children's Hospital, said Walter White of Northeast Philadelphia.
"Everybody's happy that he's making progress," the grandfather said outside Ryan's house. He could not provide details of Ryan's condition.
A Children's Hospital spokeswoman said she was not authorized to comment on whether Ryan is a patient.
Last week, in the only public statement Ryan's parents have made since the Aug. 4 accident, they said he suffered "fractures to his pelvis, left leg, and ankle; a laceration to his liver; and a traumatic brain injury that is slowly improving."
The Whites were on a California vacation planned around seeing a Phillies game, and they had just watched their team defeat the Giants when Ryan was hit a few blocks from AT&T Park. The alleged driver was caught hours later and charged with felony hit and run, driving under the influence, and driving with an open container.
The Phillies were in town for three more games that weekend, and centerfielder Shane Victorino, manager Charlie Manuel, and general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. visited Ryan in the hospital. Both teams gave the young sports fan autographed memorabilia.
