POMPTON LAKES, N.J. - The state is lowering the level of a reservoir as Hurricane Irene approaches.
Gov. Christie announced Friday that the water level in Pompton Lake Reservoir would be reduced by three feet to decrease the chance of flooding below the dam in the Passaic River basin.
Christie said the action was likely to provide only limited relief and warned that the basin still would flood if the storm brought the amount of rain forecast. Some forecasts say the state could see as much as a foot of rain.
