Woman hit by stray bullet a block from shooting scene

Four people were wounded when gunfire erupted Wednesday night in the Elmwood section of Southwest Philadelphia, police said. One of the victims was a woman who suffered a graze wound to her head while she was in a second-floor bedroom one block from where the shooting occurred, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

About 9:20 p.m., one or more gunmen fired at least 28 shots in the area of Daggett Street and Dicks Avenue, Small said.

Police took all the victims to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

A 41-year-old man was in stable condition after being shot in the left shoulder. A man in his 20s was in critical but stable condition with a bullet wounds in his groin and right leg. A 21-year-old man was stable after being shot in the back.

The woman, 26, was in stable condition with the graze wound, Small said.

Several cars also were hit by gunfire.

Five males were reported to have fled the scene, Small said.
