Sacred Heart wins in Non-Public B baseball

Tenth-seeded Sacred Heart stormed back with two runs in the seventh to upset Gill St. Bernard's in the first round of the South Jersey Non-Public B playoffs, 5-4.

Tenth-seeded Sacred Heart stormed back with two runs in the seventh to upset Gill St. Bernard's in the first round of the South Jersey Non-Public B playoffs, 5-4.

Chris Repice led the offensive attack for Sacred Heart, picking up three doubles and driving in a pair of runs.

Jon Donnelly went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored for Sacred Heart.

The Lions will take on second-seeded Moorestown Friends in the second round of the tournament on Tuesday.

In other Non-Public B play, Doane Academy's upset bid fell short against the sixth seed, Wardlaw-Hartridge, 7-5.

Doane Academy loaded the bases in the seventh inning with no outs and scored a pair of runs when Brook Eagleson lofted a sacrificed fly and Wardlaw-Hartridge committed a throwing error. But a pop out and strikeout ended the rally and the game.

"We just couldn't string anything together," Doane Academy manager Justin Cooper said. "We stranded six guys in scoring position. We couldn't get the big hit.

"We've lost five one-run games and two two-run games. It's a microcosm of the season. I guess it's bad coaching."

Doane Academy was done in by four infield errors which contributed to two unearned runs.
