Run to aid Penn cancer center

HAVERTOWN For those who want to burn off some calories before they stuff themselves with turkey and cranberry sauce - or who want to express their thankfulness for good health - a charitable Thanksgiving morning race might hit the spot.

In Havertown, runners can start their holiday with a 5K race or a 1-mile walk, an annual event that raises money for the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania. The fee to run is $20, or $10 for participants under 12. Runners can sign up at www.matt-smyth.com.

The event is held each year in memory of Matt Smyth, a former patient at the Abramson Cancer Center who died in 2010 at 23 of testicular cancer. His family organizes the Havertown race, and uses the event not only to raise money but also to remind men to regularly check themselves for signs of cancer.
