Camden man charged in string of bank heists

A Camden man has been charged in a string of South Jersey bank heists during a one-month robbery spree, authorities said Wednesday.

A Camden man has been charged in a string of South Jersey bank heists during a one-month robbery spree, authorities said Wednesday.

Brandon A. Dickerson, 22, is charged with robbing five banks in five towns, stretching from Florence in Burlington County to Haddonfield in Camden County.

He was arrested Tuesday by Edgewater Park police and charged with five counts of robbery, said Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi. He was visiting his girlfriend when police took him into custody.

At Dickerson's first appearance hearing Wednesday in Superior Court in Mount Holly, Assistant County Prosecutor John Brennan said Dickerson admitted committing the robberies.

The string of robberies began Nov. 9 when Dickerson allegedly gave a note to a teller at the Cornerstone Bank on High Street in Burlington City and fled with about $2,500, Bernardi said.

The next incident occurred Nov. 17 at a TD Bank branch on High Street in Mount Holly, when the defendant allegedly gave a teller a note and fled with about $1,550, the prosector said.

Dickerson is also charged in a Nov. 26 robbery at a Roma Bank on Main Street in Maple Shade. The defendant fled with about $1,500, Bernardi said.

A week later, he allegedly struck another Roma branch on Broad Street in Florence in a Dec. 3 robbery that netted about $1,000, the prosecutor said.

The fifth robbery occurred Dec. 9 in Haddonfield at the PNC Bank on North Haddon Avenue, Bernardi said. About $2,700 was taken in that incident, he said.

Authorities said no weapon was displayed during the robberies. During the holdups in Mount Holly and Florence, the defendant allegedly threatened to use a firearm if the teller did not follow his instructions, Bernardi said.

In all five robberies, the defendant allegedly wore a hooded jacket and jeans, Bernardi said. In some incidents, he wore sunglasses or a scarf or mask to partially cover his face, the prosecutor said.

Dickerson allegedly spent the gains on items for himself and family members, investigators said. Authorities recovered an undisclosed amount of cash.

Bail was set at $250,000 for the four Burlington County robberies and $100,000 for the Haddonfield robbery.

Burlington County has had 20 bank robberies during 2013, including 12 that occurred since Oct. 25, Bernardi said. With Dickerson's capture, he said, arrests have been made in nine of those robberies.
