Historical society is awarded $75,000

WEST CHESTER The Chester County Historical Society has been awarded a $75,000 grant that officials say will go to making much-needed repairs on its North High Street history center.

The funds, given through Pennsylvania's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, will be spent on new roofing; repairs to the front terrace; heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning upgrades; and other interior and exterior projects, according to a news release.

"This grant will allow us to move forward with our broad programmatic plans and will ensure that we can play a growing role in our region's educational and economic life," society president Rob Lukens said in the release.

He added that building maintenance is vital to the facility's rental program and "role as a cultural tourism attraction."

The historical society moved into a former YMCA building in the early 1990s. Lukens said that because initial renovations are now nearly 20 years old, the building requires significant upgrades. - Tricia L. Nadolny
