Driver crashes after being shot 14 times in Point Breeze

Police had made no arrests by Saturday afternoon in the killing of a man who was shot more than a dozen times before crashing his SUV Friday evening in the Point Breeze section of the city.

The 46-year-old man, whose name police withheld Saturday, was shot shortly before 6 p.m. while driving on the 1500 block of South Cleveland Street.

Police were initially called to the scene for a report of a person with a gun.

Officers found the 2008 Nissan crashed into the front of a house. The engine was still revving, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

"The victim was unconscious in the driver seat with his foot on the gas," Small said.

The bloodied driver, shot around 14 times according to initial information, was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania at 6:06 p.m.

Doctors said he had been shot in the head, left shoulder, chest, and torso, Small said.

Homicide detectives said Saturday they had no updates in the case, and no arrests had been made. Only one shell casing had been found on the sidewalk Saturday, Small said, suggesting the shots may have come from a house on the block.
