Man shot to death in West Phila. while walking puppy

A man in his early 20s walking a pit bull puppy was fatally shot Monday night in West Philadelphia, police said.

A man in his early 20s walking a pit bull puppy was fatally shot Monday night in West Philadelphia, police said.

Around 7:20 p.m., the man was shot once in the head in the 300 block of Horton Street, said Chief Inspector Scott Small. Police took the victim to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:34 p.m.

Residents said they heard a single gunshot and then saw the man lying on the sidewalk, still holding the puppy's leash. The victim might be a 23-year-old man who lives in the neighborhood, but that was not confirmed, Small said.

Animal-control officers took the puppy, but some of the residents expressed an interest in adopting it, Small said. - Robert Moran
