Catherine Ammon Hanson, 64, of Mount Holly, president of her family's A.G. Ammon Nursery in Chatsworth since February 2016, died of complications from lung cancer Friday, April 22, at the Samaritan Healthcare and Hospice Center in Mount Holly.
The nursery grows only blueberry plants and ships the young bushes wholesale to other growers, said Patricia Paluszak, a sister of Mrs. Hanson.
Born in Southport, N.C., Mrs. Hanson grew up in Tabernacle, attended Lenape High School, graduated in 1969 from Pemberton High School, and joined her family's firm as a secretary in the mid-1980s.
"My grandfather started the nursery in the '50s - Albert George Ammon," Paluszak said.
"My grandfather retired and my father took over - Albert Charles Ammon - in the '60s. He expanded. Lots of varieties," but still only blueberry bushes.
"After my dad retired," she said, "my brother took over" - Albert, in the 1990s.
With the passing of Mrs. Hanson, Paluszak said, her own son, Adam, will take charge.
And how did Mrs. Hanson like to use her blueberries at home?
"She wasn't a baker," Paluszak said. "She loved blueberries," fresh off a basket.
Besides her sister and brother, Mrs. Hanson is survived by sister Cheryl Rathbone. Her husband, Gary, died last Christmas.
A visitation was set from 10 a.m. Friday, April 29, at Perinchief Chapels, 438 High St., Mount Holly, before an 11 a.m. funeral service there, with interment in Mount Holly Cemetery.
Donations may be sent to Samaritan Healthcare and Hospice, Suite 300, 5 Eves Dr., Marlton, N.J. 08053.
