Dozens injured in Ky. bus crash

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A bus carrying students on a college campus visit veered out of control and crashed on a Kentucky interstate Tuesday, and nearly three dozen people were taken to hospitals, authorities said.

Thirty students from Waggener High School in Louisville were taken to hospitals with various injuries, along with four adults aboard the bus - including the driver, said Jody Duncan, a spokeswoman for Metro Safe, the emergency management agency for Louisville and Jefferson County.

The injured, taken to at least five area hospitals, were reported to be in stable condition, said Barbara DiMecurio, director of emergency services at University of Louisville Hospital. Police were looking into possible mechanical failure. - AP

Murder charge in Pickens case

FORT WORTH, Texas - A suspended Texas Christian University student has been indicted on a charge of felony murder for allegedly injecting heroin into the arm of the grandson of billionaire T. Boone Pickens and causing his death.

Brennan Trainer Rodriguez, who turns 22 later this month, committed an act "clearly dangerous to human life" when he injected Thomas "Ty" Boone Pickens IV with heroin, causing Pickens' death, according to the indictment.

If convicted of the first-degree felony, Rodriguez faces life in prison.

"Ty was not a heroin user or addict," said Jay Rosser, a spokesperson for the Pickens family, "and we believe that the justice system will reveal the truth of what happened that unfortunate night of Jan. 28, 2013."

Bruce Ashworth, Rodriguez's defense attorney, declined to comment Tuesday on the indictment. - Ft. Worth Star-Telegram

Derecho could hit the Midwest

MILWAUKEE - The National Weather Service was tracking a so-called derecho weather pattern Tuesday in the Midwest that could spawn severe windstorms in major metropolitan areas with gusts as strong as 100 m.p.h.

Derecho windstorms occur every year or two in a band from Texas to New England. They pack hazardous winds of at least 75 m.p.h. and maintain their intensity for hours as they sweep across vast distances. In some cases, a derecho will spawn tornados.

The current pattern could affect areas in Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh in the next two days, said Bill Bunting, a meteorologist in the agency's center in Norman, Okla. - AP
