Officer, suspect die in shootout

A police officer and a suspect died after a shootout Saturday.

Officer Tyler Stewart, 24, was shot by a suspect in a domestic-violence case, police said. He was looking for the suspect about 1:30 p.m. when a man identified as Robert W. Smith, 28, of Prescott, fired several shots at the officer, police said. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, police added.

Stewart was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center, where he died, police said.

Stewart, a graduate of Concordia College in California, had worked at the department less than a year, police said.

"This is an enormous tragedy," Chief Kevin Treadway said in a statement. "All members of the Flagstaff Police Department are grieving at this time." Mayor Jerry Nabours said, "It is heartbreaking to lose one of our officers. We collectively mourn for his family and the entire department." - AP
