Counties getting $1 million each for bridge repair

Each of New Jersey's 21 counties can expect $1 million from the state Department of Transportation to help repair bridges. "County transportation infrastructure is critical to New Jersey's commerce and quality of life," Gov. Corzine said in a statement announcing the awards yesterday. "The local bridge grants will enable New Jersey's counties to maintain and improve their bridges while creating jobs and providing property tax relief to residents." Burlington County will get money to replace a bridge over Mill Creek; Camden County will use the funds to improve the State Street Bridge over the Cooper River; and Gloucester County will use the grant to reconstruct a bridge on Glen Echo Avenue over Narriticon Run, according to the DOT release. Counties can use the grants for preventive maintenance, rehabilitation and replacement of bridges. An additional $4 million in bridge grants is included in the current state budget but they have not yet been announced. - Jonathan Tamari
