Children discovered her body lying facedown and partly covered with debris and reported it to New Jersey Transit Police. Police said the woman appeared to have been in the water for some time.

Officials described her as a Caucasian in her mid-60s who was 5-foot-8 and 197 pounds and who had brownish-blond hair. She was wearing Eddie Bauer jeans, a cotton knit sweater over a long-sleeve three-button blouse, and New Balance athletic shoes. Police said the woman also wore a Timex Ironman wristwatch and one ball-shaped clip-on earring. X-rays showed she had had surgery of the left leg, which had a plate and screws.
