Delco toddler drowns in N.J. backyard pool

UPPER TOWNSHIP, N.J. - A Delaware County toddler visiting relatives drowned in a backyard swimming pool yesterday after he apparently crawled through a dog door.

Seventeen-month-old Andrew Avellino of Newtown Square was found in the pool at an Upper Township home around 9:15 a.m. He was pronounced dead at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point a short time later.

State police say Avellino's family was visiting his grandfather, who lives in the Cape May County township, but did not say if the accident occurred at the man's home. The boy's mother was upstairs with her other children when Andrew was found. - AP
