Berks County man killed in Afghan attack

The Defense Department announced yesterday that a Berks County man, Cpl. Jonathan M. Walls of West Lawn, near Reading, was killed in action Saturday in Afghanistan.

Walls, 27, was one of three U.S. soldiers killed in the village of Mushan when insurgents attacked their patrol with rocket-propelled grenades and improvised explosive devices.

Also killed were Pfc. Richard K. Jones, 21, of Person, N.C., and Pvt. Patrick S. Fitzgibbon, 19, of Knoxville, Tenn. The three were assigned to the First Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, Fourth Brigade Combat Team, Fourth Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo. - David O'Reilly
