Harry Earle, 42, who started in the Gloucester Township Police Department as a dispatcher in college, is its new chief.
A former deputy chief, Earle was sworn in at a Township Council meeting Tuesday. He took over from 32-year veteran Edward Smith.
Earle, a township native and married father of three young children, started as a dispatcher and part-time officer in 1987 while studying at Camden County College. A year later, he became a full-time officer. His rise included stints as detective, sergeant, and captain.
He is the youngest chief in the 110-member department's history, officials said. - Darran Simon
