Christie: Don't even bother with housing bill

An Assembly bill that would bring substantial changes to how affordable housing is regulated in New Jersey won't have Gov. Christie's support. The governor Wednesday vowed he would veto the measure, which would phase in a 2.5 percent fee on nonresidential development to subsidize low-cost housing, if it were passed.

Christie has been pushing the Legislature to change affordable housing rules and campaigned on abolishing the agency that enforces them.

The proposal, which has not had a legislative hearing, is a change from a controversial bill that passed the Senate in June but stalled in the Assembly. That bill would have eliminated the fee, which was enacted in 2008 and took effect again in July after being temporarily suspended during the economic downturn. - Maya Rao
