A man was fatally shot by a New Jersey state trooper during what appeared to be an interrupted drug deal Friday night in Camden, state police said.

About 7 p.m., a state trooper approached a parked car in a lot at Baird and Admiral Wilson Boulevards, said State Police Lt. Steven Jones. The car backed up, and the trooper was struck by an open door.

At some point, the trooper fired and killed one of the occupants of the car, Jones said. Another man in the car fled. The trooper was treated and released from an area hospital. - Robert Moran
