Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst has canceled its annual Fourth of July celebration because of federal budget cuts.

As a result of the across-the-board spending cuts, known as sequestration, enacted by Congress, Department of Defense civilian workers will be furloughed beginning in July.

In a news release, the base said it would not have enough resources to hold the celebration because of a staff shortage. A couple of thousand people typically come to the fireworks show at the military base, a spokeswoman said.
