ATVer, 11, pulling sled in snow killed by dump truck

An 11-year-old boy driving an ATV pulling a sled through the snow was fatally injured Tuesday afternoon in a collision with dump truck in rural Logan Township, Gloucester County, police said Wednesday.

A 13-year-old girl riding on the back of the ATV suffered nonlife threatening injuries; two other girls, ages 12 and 13, who were on the sled, were not harmed.

Police did not release the names of any of the children.

Logan Police Chief James Schmidt, said the boy, a fifth grader at Logan Elementary School, was towing the sled through a field about 4:20 p.m. when the ATV entered Oak Grove Road "for whatever reason" near the I-295 overpass and was hit by the dump truck, police said.

Both children on the ATV were taken to Crozer Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pa., where the boy was pronounced dead and the girl was treated for her injuries.

The dump truck is owned by R.E. Pierson Construction Co., which has an asphalt plant on Oak Grove Road.

Schmidt said there was no indication the driver, a 36-year-old Bridgeton man, was impaired at the time.

Police are continuing to investigate and no charges have been filed.

Catherine A. Kelly, principal at Logan Elementary, said the members of the school district community "are working together to provide counseling support for students throughout the district during this difficult time."

"My thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved and I know our entire school families feel the same," she said.
