Dock worker killed while unloading ship

GLOUCESTER CITY A man was killed at a shipping dock Tuesday after being struck by a cargo tray that weighed more than 4,000 pounds, officials said.

The incident occurred around noon at Gloucester Terminal, located in the 100 block of South King Street, in an area where fruit from a ship was being unloaded onto the tray by a crane.

Authorities were investigating why the tray struck the 53-year-old Deptford man who had worked at the facility since February 2007 and was helping unload cargo, company officials said.

His name was being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, said Kevin Feeley, a spokesman for Holt Logistics, which runs Gloucester Terminal.

"As far as we can tell at this point, it looks like an accident," he said Tuesday afternoon.
