VINELAND A man died in police custody in Cumberland County on Tuesday, authorities said, less than two weeks after an inmate died in an unrelated incident at the county jail.

Phillip White, 32, of Vineland, was put in handcuffs around 11 a.m. Tuesday after Vineland police responded to a report of a disorderly person in the 100 block of Grape Street, the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office said Wednesday. Officers then had to call an ambulance because White was having respiratory distress, the prosecutor's office said.

White became unresponsive in the ambulance and was pronounced dead at the hospital, authorities said.

On March 22, at the Cumberland County Jail, Alissa Allen, 24, of Millville, was discovered alone and unresponsive around 5:30 a.m., two days after being arrested in Millville on charges that were not disclosed Wednesday.

Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae, reached by phone Wednesday, said she could not comment on either case. Autopsies are pending.
