Brigantine wants to ban portable toilets from beaches

Seeking to head off what officials fear is a budding trend, Brigantine wants to ban portable toilets from its beaches.

Seeking to head off what officials fear is a budding trend, Brigantine wants to ban portable toilets from its beaches.

The Press of Atlantic City reports that the problem emerged last August when city crews found human waste in trash cans at the city's four-wheel drive beaches.

The toilets are intended for camping, but some beachgoers have used them in pop-up huts or behind shower curtains, according to the newspaper.

Brigantine has Porta-Potties at entrances to its four-wheel drive beaches.

"If it's a trend, we want to make sure we have something in place so that our beachgoers, and our employees, don't have to deal with something that could potentially be hazardous," the Press quoted Mayor Phil Guenther as saying.

City Council is expected to introduce an ordinance at its next meeting, set for April 15.
